Karleen Thompson: Assistant Coach of The WNBA’s Atlanta Dream Speaks On Empowering Women Through Sports

Karleen Thompson, Assistant Coach of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, grew up with 11 siblings.  Competition was a way of life for her.

Competition taught Thompson about winning and losing.  She excelled in basketball, volleyball and track during her high school years, earning All-State honors in all three sports.  She would go on to letter in basketball at the University of Southern California, playing alongside Tina Thompson and Lisa Leslie.

After her playing days, Thompson went on to acquire both head and assistant coaching positions at the highest levels of women’s basketball.

The Path Less Traveled

Thompson spent eight years in the Los Angeles Sparks organization from 1997-2004.  She helped guide the Sparks to WNBA titles in 2001 and 2002.

In 2006, just three women were head coaches in the WNBA.  At the start of the 2007 season two more were hired.  Thompson, hired as the head coach and general manager of the Houston Comets, was one of those women.

Welcome To Atlanta

Thompson came to the Atlanta Dream as an Assistant Coach after spending three seasons as an Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Clemson University.

I am sure it will not be long before Thompson helps bring a WNBA Championship to the city of Atlanta.

“Her player development skills are some of the best in the profession and put her in the top levels of coaches in the game,” said Atlanta Dream Head Coach Michael Cooper
